An elegant piece fabricated from Baltic Birch plywood, the Kelk Armchair features an abundance of curvilinear forms inspired by mathematical patterns and elements of the natural world. Designed in Shapr3D, thirty nine components were fabricated from a single sheet of plywood using a CNC router and finished by hand. Various types of joinery were used to create the flowing curves of the armchair, and the final form remains sturdy enough so as to not require any reinforcement.
From the Estonian, 'kelk' translates to sled or toboggan, and serves as a linguistic homage to both the geographical origin of the material and the inspiration behind the curved forms of the chair. Collectively, these forms create a unique piece that looks just as elegant situated in a vibrant garden as it does in a cozy living room.
